The Countdown Begins

Friday, January 27th, 2006

A week and a day remain before the big day!

Before I begin, I thought you might like to see this Daily Freeman article. Bonnie Langston, the reporter who interviewed me, was a really nice woman and I feel that this article probably got a lot more people aware that the Expo is happening.

As I repeat in many places throughout this website: If you feel the burning desire to help out (and who doesn’t?), the best possibly way is to tell everyone you know! Tell them to come to the Expo, tell them about the free food, entertainment, and great opportunities to learn that will be there. Tell them to check out this website! Do it by email, phone, word-of-mouth, even by hanging up posters.

Today I will be picking up a large amount of blank tee-shirts to be printed and sold at the Expo. Also, students at the Woodstock Day School and the Woodstock Elementary School have very kindly (and awesomely) decorated about 400 shopping bags from the Sunflower Natural Foods market. The bags will be going back to Sunflower in the near future and will be used for shopping. Keep an eye out for more blog entries with photos of the awesomely decorated bags.

It’s still up in the air, but a company called CRT Recycling Inc. may be coming to the Environmental Expo to pick up hazardous household waste. This is a great opportunity for all you folks who want to get rid of obsolete computers, monitors, televisions, cell phones, iPods, or any other electronic parts that would otherwise contaminate landfills with lead. There may be a small (under $10) fee to drop off items. I’ll keep you updated as things progress.

County Support

Tuesday, January 17th, 2006

I just got back from a meeting of the Ulster County Legislature (that’s where Brian Shapiro serves). They unanimously voted on a resolution that I think you should know about:

Resolution No. 27, January 19, 2006: Supporting The Environmental Expo To Be Held At The Town Of Woodstock Community Center On February 4, 2006

The Environmental Committee (Chairman Shapiro and Legislators Bartels, Distel, R. A. Parete, Rodriguez, Fabiano, and McAfee) offers the following:

WHEREAS, the Ulster County Legislature recognizes the important role of education and public awareness in regard to environmental issues in our community, and

WHEREAS, the Environmental Expo is an open public event that will feature exhibits, speakers and demonstrations from many groups representing a range of environmental interests and organizations, and

WHEREAS, the Environmental Expo is sponsored by the Town of Woodstock Environmental Commission and ins recognized by various civic organizations, schools, and businesses in Ulster County.

RESOLVED, that the Ulster County Legislature wishes to proclaim support and appreciation for the 2006 Environmental Expo to be held at the Town of Woodstock Community Center on February 4, 2006,

and moves its adoption.

ADOPTED BY THE FOLLOWING VOTE:

AYES: all, NOES: none

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

NONE

0105

Yes, that was a unanimous vote! And they clapped! I’m pretty happy.

Oops!

Friday, January 13th, 2006

We made a big mistake. The schedule had the wrong group signed up to make presentations about becoming a wildlife rehabilitator and about building a backyard wildlife sanctuary. The Ravensbeard Wildlife Center will be doing both presentations.

I’m very sorry for any confusion this might have caused.

Less Than a Month Away

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

Wow, things are really rolling… the Environmental Expo is less than a month away, and I thought I’d update everyone about the different exciting things that are going on now.

  1. The Poster Contest: Yes, you read right. There’s going to be a poster contest (for middle and high school-age kids in the Ulster County area). . . .
  2. Sunflower Shopping Bag Decoration: Elementary school kids from the Woodstock Day School and Woodstock Elementary are going to be decorating paper shopping bags from the local Woodstock Sunflower Natural Foods Market with environmental themes and a little advertisement for the Expo. Then those bags will be used at the store (during the week directly before the event).
  3. Tee-Shirts: We’re going to be printing tee-shirts with Aja’s logo on them. They will be sold at the Expo (for the very cheap price of however much it costs to print them… no markup).

With the Expo right around the corner, I would appreciate if you told everyone you know about the event. The more people that show up, the more fun this will be. If you want to be lazy, just copy the following and send it to everyone in an email:

Hello! I just wanted to let you know about a great event that’s coming up: the Environmental Expo! It’s going to happen all day on February 4th, 2006 (that’s a Saturday) at the Woodstock Community Center, in the middle of Woodstock, NY. The Expo is going to be attended by about 20 completely diverse and unique environmental organizations who will be showing exhibits and presentations. This is a perfect opportunity for you to get more involved with environmental issues in the area (you know you want to!) and to see what’s new with the environmental crowd. And as if that wasn’t reason enough for you to be there, there’s going to be live music and free food throughout the day! If you want directions or more information, visit www.environmentalexpo.org or just write back. I can’t wait to see you there! Please forward this to everyone you think would be interested! Thank you!! Yay!

All right, thanks everyone! I guess I’ll talk to you all later. ~Max

The Second Expo Press Release

Tuesday, January 10th, 2006

Just a month after the first press release, Elly and Dan have written a second. Here it is:

Contact: Max Edmands (845) 679-0381 vccomm@halfmoonlodge28.org cell phone: (845) 750-1068

For Immediate Release: Environmental Expo Kicks Into High Gear

On Saturday, February 4th, 2006 the Woodstock Community Center will be the place to be as the Environmental Expo presents over a dozen organizations and speakers, as well as live music and refreshments all day. This free event created by Woodstock teen Max Edmands and sponsored by the Woodstock Environmental Commission will show people exactly what they can do to improve the way we use our natural resources and interact with our environment. Included on the roster of speakers are Brian Shapiro, the newly appointed chair of the Ulster County legislature’s Environmental Committee, astronomer Bob Berman, and representatives from several of the exhibiting organizations which include the Ashokan Field Campus, the Forsyth Nature Center, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Ravensbeard Wildlife Center, Trout Unlimited, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The community is coming together to support the Expo in a variety of ways. Elementary and high school students are participating in the Expo by decorating shopping bags and creating posters while local businesses are supporting the event by making donations of cash and food. Some of the area’s finest talent will be on hand to entertain, including songstress Elly Wininger, Catskill crooner James Krueger, and some special surprise guests.

“I’m totally blown away by the response I’ve received so far… this event is going to be absolutely amazing,” says Max. “People really just don’t realize how much there is to do out there if you want to support the environment, or look out for the world we live in. Absolutely nobody has an excuse to just sit back and do nothing when there are all these opportunities for action just waiting to be taken.”

For more information about the Environmental Expo and how you can participate, please visit www.environmentalexpo.org.
